An EUS is a specialized endoscopic procedure where a long, thin, flexible ultrasound probe is placed into the mouth and advanced to the duodenum or start of the small intestine. It can also be used to evaluate abnormalities of the lower GI tract via the rectum.

An EUS exam may be performed to examine and biopsy abnormalities in the wall of the intestine, or abnormalities in other organs such as the pancreas, biliary system, and chest. EUS is often used to diagnose cancer. EUS should be performed by a specially trained gastroenterologist
