When veins in your anus and lower rectum are under pressure they become inflamed and swollen. The result is known as hemorrhoids.

The most common causes of hemorrhoids are:

  • Straining during a bowel movement
  • Constipation
  • Pregnancy

Small hemorrhoids usually resolve themselves when the source of the pressure is resolved. Adding fiber to your diet and making sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids during the day will help to avoid constipation. If possible, avoid straining during a bowel movement. If the constipation does not resolve, you may need to see a doctor to make sure there is not an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Large or chronic hemorrhoids that bleed and cause pain which interferes with your daily life would be cause to seek medical help.
