Colitis is an inflammatory response in the colon, caused by an infection, use of some medications, allergic reactions, or an autoimmune reaction.

It is important to note that colitis can be serious and must be diagnosed by a gastrointestinal specialist. Some types can only be confirmed under a microscope. You should seek medical help if you experience:

  • ongoing abdominal pain
  • cramping
  • ongoing diarrhea – with or without blood in the stool
